The Apache POI project web (http://poi.apache.org/) states: Office Open XML Support: We are currently working to support the new Office Open XML file formats, such as XLSX and PPTX, which were introduced in Office 2007. I guess the point is that anyone can decided if they want to add a filter or some extension to Apache, no matter what the ASF might or might not fell about it. The interesting thing here is not really what ASF feel about it, but that someone has decided that there is a need and have decided to act on it: notes2self.net/.../...g-openxml-to-apache-poi.aspx
