OpenOffice and Open XML

You do not have to wait for OpenOffice 3.0 (expected some time in September 2008) for Open XML support I Open Office, which is by the way limited to import only for reasons that I do not have insight into nor understand. If anyone has specific information as to why OpenOffice support for Open XML is limited to import I'd be happy to hear about it?

Novell offers Open XML support for OpenOffice for SUSE Linux and Microsoft Windows already with their OpenOffice.OpenXML Translator 1.1.0.

On Novell’s web site you can read:

Product description:

The OpenXML Translator provides support for opening and saving Microsoft* OpenXML-formatted word processing documents (.docx), spreadsheet documents (.xslx) and slideshow documents (.pptx) in OpenOffice.org.
